No.24, Moments of Madness Costs Lives, last updated on: 07/02/2010
Moments of Madness Cause on average 50 Deaths Every Year!

Irresponsible behaviour by employers and employees is directly responsible for workers falling from height, resulting in an average of 50 deaths every year.
Inappropriate use of work equipment is the main reason for these deaths, as can be seen in the picture.
“Suitable and sufficient training and supervision must be provided to all employees to kerb these wholly avoidable accidents,” said John Lawrence, head of Tennyson Suite’s Safety Team.

Building Contractors are reminded of their duty to ensure that construction activities are undertaken safely and in accordance with the minimum standards required by the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007.
The CDM Regulations 2007 apply to all construction projects including home extensions, refurbishments, loft conversions, as well as the new building of houses, offices and industrial units.

The regulations impose specific duties on all contractors, (including bricklayers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians and roof tilers), and any designer employed.
Where all commercial properties are built, altered, maintained and refurbished, the client (owner, occupier) of the building has duties and responsibilities as well.
The Client may well need to employ a CDM Co-ordinator to assist him to comply with his duties.

Employee Fined £2500 for Colleagues Death.
Magistrates heard how a trained and experienced forklift driver let his fellow employee stand on the forks of his forklift truck, so that he could reach pallets stacked on the second deck of a two-tier lorry, in order to scan barcodes.
The man lost his footing on the metal forks whilst he was stretching to scan one of the pallets, falling 3m to the ground.
He suffered multiple injuries and died 2 months later in hospital.
The forklift driver was fined £2500 in Skipton Magistrates Court for causing his death.
This unsafe activity was a moment of madness by both men, whom were trained and experienced operatives.
The men's employer was found innocent of any wrong-doing, as the records showed that procedures had been properly followed and sufficient training and supervision had been afforded to each employee.
This case highlights the fact that individuals must take responsibility for their own actions, or face the consequences.
