No.22, Employee Paid £450,000 After Fall, last updated on: 25/01/2010
Electrical Engineer Wins £450,000 Compensation for Ladder Fall.

A home improvement company employee has won substantial damages for falling from a ladder whilst removing redundant cables from the outside of a house.
The employee, Mr Waring, fell 4 metres to the paved patio below when the cables he was attempting to remove came away from the side of the house, making him lose his balance on the ladder so causing him to fall.
He landed on his feet, but the force of the impact was so high that he shattered both of his ankles. The injuries were so severe that Mr Waring had to have his left leg amputated below the knee.

A scaffold platform should have been provided for this high risk task, together with the provision of appropriate training to Mr Waring; none of which had been undertaken.
Mr Waring’s employers admitted liability and paid him the damages which will be used for his care and rehabilitation.

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 is in force to detail the minimum standards required by law to prevent such accidents.
